Ditch Media Player, and check out Foobar2000

Windows Media Player is bundled with Windows computers, which means nearly everyone uses it for their playback requirements. Along with the occasional use of VLC Media Player, for playing nearly every format available. But when your library hits the XL level such as 10GB, your probably on the look out for a more streamlined, lighter, simplistic player. Meet Foobar2000...

Foobar2000 is an advanced freeware music player that has a whole horde of cool features you won't find in Windows Media Player, and a name like a Sci-Fi gun.

It has a VERY lightweight, customisable interface which is not likely to be bogged down by the weight of your very essential tunes. So your saying "yeah, yeah its so it flies, what else?".

Well, Foobar has support for gapless playback right out of the box. This is one of my most used features as i love it when I can listen to music without having gaps in between. Lets put it this way, music sounds so much better continuous.

It also supports something called ReplayGain. ReplayGain is a feature (essential for all you audiophiles) that allows all songs and sounds to remain as they are, to provide the right degree of loudness and softness. It has a handy component for converting file formats built right in. It supports these audio formats:

  • MP3, MP4, AAC, CD Audio, WMA, Vorbis, FLAC, WavPack, WAV, AIFF, Musepack, Speex, AU, SND...
This list gets longer if you decide to download components. Yes, this player has a very, very, long list of components, each of which is, optional to use, and free. Did I mention that they all add some sort of advanced capability to the player.

Verdict:
Got a horde of songs and only care about your songs and how they sound? Go check out Foobar2000. It's simplistic, highly customisable UI is for you. Don't need all those enhancements, or are you just too used to the (somewhat) slick Media Player interface? Stick with it, or try VLC Media Player for more format support, or NOOW.

Shown above are some example of what you can do with Foobar2000.
